I know the first thing most of you think about when turning the corner to a healthier lifestyle is diet. Don't worry. We will definitely get to that. What you put into your body is extremely important to your health for so many reasons but for now I want to give you a few simple steps that you can start incorporating into your daily routine right this minute. Here are what I believe to be 5 simple steps to being a healthier you.
#1 Start Moving!
With only a few months of warm weather left, get outside and start moving! I'm not saying you need to start training for a marathon, but experts agree that 30 minutes of daily activity improves mood, controls weight, boosts your energy, improves sleep, and even your sex life. With chronic disease still on the rise right now, it is more important than ever to bring back those New Years' resolutions. Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work, check out that new yoga studio you've been hearing about, or pair up with a friend to commit to a morning run each day of the week. You will start to reap the benefits in no time.
#2 Drink More H2O!
This is by far the most challenging for me. One way I have found to keep myself hydrated throughout the day is carrying a small spill-proof water bottle in my bag so I have it wherever I go. Choosing water over soda or juice(which are both full of sugar) helps control weight, prevents muscle fatigue during exercise, keeps your skin looking great, and removes toxins from the body. Don't think you can't add other healthy beverages, such as green tea or my personal favorite, kombucha, to your diet to keep things interesting.
#3 Catch Some zzz's!
I'm willing to bet most of you don't get enough sleep. Most researchers recommend 7-8 hours per night though some people may need more or less. College students and parents of newborns are among the most sleep deprived, so if you find yourself dozing off during class or work, listen up. Better sleep improves mood, boosts your immune system, and allows for clearer thinking. If you have trouble falling asleep, try turning off all electronics at least one hour prior to crawling into bed, practicing yoga or meditation to calm your mind, or using essential oils (like lavender or chamomile) that have relaxing properties.
#4 Think Positive!
If this sweet little one doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will. The power of a positive attitude is amazing. Those who think optimistic thoughts can more easily combat disease and depression and tend to have a longer lifespan overall, so when you're feeling down in the dumps, hang out with a friend who always puts you in a better mood, practice positive affirmations, volunteer for a local charity, or do anything else that tends to brighten your day.
#5 Get Adjusted
Do you believe that going to your dentist or getting your oil changed regularly is important? It is equally important to keep your spine aligned. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to improve overall health, increase mobility, decrease pain, and even lower blood pressure. Don’t forget about getting your whole family adjusted. Chiropractics is equally as important for babies and pregnant moms as they are going through extreme bodily changes. Make spinal hygiene part of your new, healthy lifestyle today.
